New contracts for patient transport services

Date: 20 Dec 2016

Category: Services

Contracts for patient transport services in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have been awarded to E-Zec Medical Transport, and V Cars Streamline Black and White Taxis for renal patient transport services.

The new contracts, awarded following patient consultation and a competitive tender process carried out by Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Groups (BNSSG CCGs), will be effective from 1 April 2017.

The patient transport service provides planned, non-emergency transport to and from NHS hospitals and clinics, including outpatient departments, inter-hospital transfers, renal dialysis and oncology centres.

It is only available for eligible patients for medical reasons, in accordance with national eligibility criteria. The patient transport service is not available for trips to primary care services such as GP practices and is not part of the emergency ambulance service.

Commissioners from BNSSG CCGs are now working with the new providers to ensure a seamless transfer of services for patients and staff from the current provider, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT). SWASFT did not bid for the new contract.

Staff currently working in the patient transport service for SWASFT will be given the opportunity to transfer their employment to the new provider, under their current terms and conditions.

V Cars Streamline Black and White Taxis is already providing renal patient transport services.

"E-Zec Transport is an experienced provider of patient transport services and has proposed service improvements and value for money through the procurement process. We will be working with the new provider to ensure a seamless transfer of services for patients from the current provider, and a smooth process for staff moving over. V Cars Streamline Black and White Taxis has a strong track record in providing the transport service for renal patients."

- Speaking on behalf of BNSSG CCGs, Nicola Dunn, chief financial officer for Bristol CCG

"The E-zec team are delighted with the outcome of the tender process and are looking forward to providing patients in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire with a high quality transport service. The new service is a fantastic addition to our existing contracts and expands our services across the South West of England."

- Andy Wickenden, commercial director for E-zec Transport Services
