Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Bristol City Council are urging local people and businesses to pledge their support for Bristol’s 40,000 carers during Carers’ Week 2017, which runs from 12-18 June. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who cannot manage without their help.
This year’s event gives businesses, charities, public sector organisations and ordinary members of the public the chance to pledge their support for carers in the local community.
Bristol CCG Clinical Lead for Long Term Conditions said, “Carers’ Week is a national awareness week where we help the general public understand more about the challenges which carers face and celebrate the contribution that carers make to their friends, families and communities.
“Around one in ten people in Bristol are carers and these people provide unpaid care which is estimated to have a staggering economic value of £756 million per year. It is vitally important we ensure carers have the right kind of support to provide the highest quality of care for their loved ones and to help them lead happy and fulfilling lives.
“Carers’ week is a great opportunity to help us spread awareness of the important role which carers play and highlight some of the issues and challenges which carers face, often on a daily basis. The events taking place across Bristol are a great way for local people to find out more about what support is available and meet other carers and professionals.
“We are pledging our support to help raise awareness of the role of carers and the support which is available to them. We would urge others to visit the Carers’ Week website and pledge your support for local carers in any way you feel you can.“
Events taking place in Bristol include the Carers’ Support Centre holding an open meeting at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds on Thursday 15 June and Singing for Carers at Cabot Circus on Saturday 17 June to help raise funds for a local carers group. The Integrated Carers’ Team from Bristol City Council are also holding a carers’ awareness and information stand in Sainsbury’s on Winterstoke Road between 9am-5pm on Wednesday 14 June.
In total there are more than 850 events taking place across the UK and there have been over 4000 pledges of support for carers so far.
